18th. February 2019: High blood pressure: why is it a big deal?

High blood pressure – or hypertension – is the world’s biggest killer. More than cancer, obesity, or transmitted disease. It causes stroke, heart and kidney disease. And, Scotland is amongst the worst affected. But, current treatments work poorly – they either don’t work well, or people stop taking them because of side-effects. And, nothing new has appeared in over 20 years. We need new drugs against new targets in the body.
